North Norfolk has no business being this good for food. A rural coastline of salt marshes, flint villages and working fishing harbours might not suggest a dining destination of national significance — and yet here we are. Michelin-starred dining, a Bib Gourmand in a deer park, two-AA-Rosette restaurants with views over the marshes, and some of the finest seafood in England, often landed just miles from where it is served.

From Michelin-starred restaurants and fresh seafood by the coast to relaxed gastropubs, Sunday lunches and some of the best places to eat near Wells-next-the-Sea, Holt and Holkham, North Norfolk offers an extraordinary range of dining experiences.

Whether you're staying at Willow Cottage in Wighton, Mill Barn in Binham or Robin Hood Cottage in Walsingham, you are within easy reach of restaurants that would grace any major city. Here are our ten favourites — from a meal that might change your life to a long slow lunch that you'll be planning your next trip around.

1. Meadowsweet, Holt

One Michelin Star | Modern British | Tasting Menu

If there is one restaurant in North Norfolk that demands your full attention, it is Meadowsweet. Chef Greg Anderson and his partner Rebecca Williams opened this small restaurant with rooms in a lovingly restored Georgian building in Holt in the summer of 2021, and within months it had won a Michelin star — one of the fastest in the region's history. It has earned national recognition alongside its Michelin star and is widely regarded as one of Norfolk's leading destination restaurants.

The dining room is intimate and quietly beautiful — pale tones, glowing wood, and the disarming detail of handmade tables with menus and cutlery tucked into a drawer. You enter through an illuminated rear garden, which sets the tone perfectly. The food is a ten-course tasting menu built around the finest local and seasonal produce — lobster, quail, Norfolk vegetables, coastal herbs — delivered with precision, warmth and the occasional playful touch, including a multi-dish shared dessert course that guests invariably remember long after the rest. Greg introduces as many courses as he can himself.

Expect to pay around £130 per head for the tasting menu, excluding wine. Book months in advance for weekend tables, and consider a room — staying the night means you end the evening at your own pace, and the breakfast the following morning is exceptional.

2. Morston Hall, Morston

One Michelin Star | Modern British | Tasting Menu

Morston Hall has held a Michelin star for decades, making it one of North Norfolk's longest-established fine-dining destinations — and remains one of the great dining destinations of the North Norfolk coast. The 17th-century country house hotel sits two miles from Blakeney, surrounded by manicured gardens that give way to the salt marshes and the sea.

In 2025, Galton Blackiston — who built Morston into a national institution over more than three decades — sold the property to hotelier Henry Elworthy and departed. The restaurant is now led by executive chef Phil Kearsey, who brings extraordinary credentials including spells at The Waterside Inn and Thomas Keller's The French Laundry in California, working alongside head chef Farrel Hirsch. A planned refurbishment of the restaurant and bedrooms was completed in early 2026. The kitchen garden — a living, evolving source of ingredients just beyond the kitchen door — remains central to the philosophy, and the daily-changing eight-course tasting menu (£145 per head) continues to evolve with the seasons.

The conservatory dining room overlooking the gardens is the place to sit in summer. Booking is essential and should be made well in advance.

3. The Neptune, Old Hunstanton

One Michelin Star | Classic British | Intimate Dining

The Neptune is the North Norfolk restaurant that most rewards a drive. Set in an 18th-century coaching inn a short walk from the beach at Old Hunstanton, it is one of the most personal and intimate Michelin-starred dining experiences in England — chef Kevin Mangeolles works alone in his kitchen, cooks every dish himself and, more often than not, delivers them to your table in person.

Kevin and his wife Jacki have held their Michelin star since 2009 and show no sign of relinquishing it. The cooking is classically rooted and fiercely seasonal — locally landed crab, lobster and fish from the Norfolk coast, game and pork from nearby estates, Norfolk raspberries and strawberries in summer — with a quiet confidence that makes fashionable trickery seem unnecessary. Jacki runs the front of house with the same warmth and calm authority, and the whole experience has a personal, unhurried quality that sets it apart from more theatrical fine dining operations.

There are just a handful of tables, making The Neptune feel genuinely intimate. With four bedrooms for those who wish to stay, it is the perfect excuse for a proper gastronomic break.

4. The Victoria at Holkham

2 AA Rosettes | Estate Produce | Dog Friendly

Standing at the gates of Holkham Hall and moments from the golden sands of Holkham Beach, The Victoria is the perfect embodiment of what makes North Norfolk such an exceptional destination. The menu is built almost entirely around the Holkham Estate's own produce — beef from the estate farms, lamb and pork from tenant farmers, game from the family shoot, venison from the estate's herd of fallow deer, vegetables from the walled garden, and fish and shellfish from the North Norfolk coast. The kitchen also works with local foragers, and samphire, sea herbs and wild garlic appear regularly in season.

The two-AA-Rosette kitchen serves lunch and dinner daily, with the light and airy orangery offering sweeping views over the Holkham National Nature Reserve — watching a marsh harrier quarter the reed beds while eating excellent estate beef is a very fine way to spend a lunchtime. The Sunday roast is particularly celebrated. Dogs are welcome in the main restaurant and bar, and the Victoria is a short drive from Willow Cottage and Mill Barn.

5. The Chandlery, Wells-next-the-Sea

Harbourside Dining | Wine-led | Seasonal British

One of the most exciting recent additions to the North Norfolk dining scene, The Chandlery sits right on the harbour at Wells and combines the skills of sommelier Bert Blaize with the cooking of chef Harry Williams, who previously held three AA Rosettes at The Gin Trap Inn. The result is a restaurant that takes both food and wine equally seriously — the list is thoughtfully curated and constantly evolving, and the food is rooted in Norfolk produce sourced from fishermen, farmers and growers along the coast.

The harbour-side setting is simply magnificent — salt marshes stretching to the horizon on one side, the gentle activity of the quayside on the other. This is a restaurant for a long evening rather than a quick dinner; the kind of place where the pacing of the meal and the quality of the wine list invite you to settle in and let the evening take its own course. Book in advance — The Chandlery has established itself quickly as one of the most talked-about tables in the county.

6. The Carpenters Arms, Wighton

Award-Winning Gastropub | Local Produce | Wighton

For guests staying at Willow Cottage, The Carpenters Arms in the village of Wighton requires nothing more than a short walk from the front door — and winning Norfolk Pub of the Year 2024 means it is very much worth the walk. This is exactly the kind of local pub that guests from the city dream of finding: warm, welcoming and serious about its food without taking itself too seriously.

The kitchen makes excellent use of Norfolk produce, the beer is well-kept, and the atmosphere has the easy, convivial energy of a pub that serves both regulars and visitors with equal enthusiasm. As a post-beach dinner or a long relaxed Sunday lunch it is genuinely difficult to beat, and the fact that it is effectively on the doorstep of Willow Cottage removes even the minor inconvenience of finding a parking space.

7. The Black Lion, Walsingham

Historic Inn | Seasonal Dining | Little Walsingham

Set in a historic Grade II-listed building in the heart of Little Walsingham, close to the ruins of Walsingham Priory, The Black Lion is the sister restaurant to The Carpenters Arms in Wighton, and shares the same commitment to quality and warmth. For guests staying at Robin Hood Cottage, it is a matter of a few minutes' walk — one of those happy coincidences that makes a holiday feel effortlessly well organised.

The setting is extraordinary: flint walls, ancient timbers and the ruins of one of England's most significant medieval priories just beyond the window. The food is seasonal, locally sourced and confidently prepared, and the atmosphere has the relaxed charm that characterises the best North Norfolk dining. A firm favourite with locals and visitors alike, and a place that rewards a return visit.

The Carpenters Arms and The Black Lion also feature in our guide to the best pubs in North Norfolk.

8. The Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market

Michelin Bib Gourmand | Fire Cooking | Deer Park

The Gunton Arms is unlike anywhere else in North Norfolk — possibly unlike anywhere else in England. Set in a 17th-century pub on the edge of a 1,000-acre deer park near Cromer, it is the kind of place that is easier to experience than to describe. The walls are hung with works by Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Lucian Freud. Herds of deer roam the parkland beyond the windows. And in the flag-floored Elk Room, prime cuts of local meat — venison from the estate, pork chops, ribs of beef — are cooked over a vast open fire as you watch from your table.

The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognises the quality and exceptional value of the cooking, which extends well beyond the fire: excellent pies, nose-to-tail dishes, superb roasts on Sundays carved from whole animals, and careful sourcing from local producers throughout. The atmosphere is warm, eccentric and unpretentious — a pub that happens to serve food of remarkable quality in a setting that feels genuinely unique. Allow around 45 minutes to drive from Wighton, and book well in advance.

9. The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe

2 AA Rosettes | Seafood | Salt-Marsh Views

There is a strong case for the terrace at The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe, as the finest place to eat in North Norfolk on a summer evening — mussels and oysters from the tidal beds in the marsh directly below you, a glass of wine from the local Burn Valley Vineyard, and the sun going down over Scolt Head Island. It is one of those settings that makes everything taste better.

The food, in any case, needs no such assistance. Executive chef Fran Hartshorne has built a menu of exceptional quality, earning two AA Rosettes and a recommendation from the Good Food Guide. The on-site Staithe Smokehouse produces award-winning smoked salmon and other delicacies, and local fishermen supply the kitchen directly. Brancaster oysters and mussels, locally caught crab and lobster, freshly landed sea bass and mackerel — the seafood here is as good as it gets on the English coast. The sustainability credentials are also impressive, with recognition from the Sustainable Restaurant Association through its Food Made Good programme.

Booking is essential, particularly for the conservatory restaurant in summer. Dogs are welcome in the bar and courtyard areas.

10. The Glaven Bistro, Glandford

Family-run | Daytime Dining | Dog Friendly

The Glaven Bistro is the kind of place that visitors to North Norfolk discover and immediately resolve to return to. Set in a beautifully converted North Norfolk carrot barn — all flint walls and ancient beams — on the Bayfield Estate in the village of Glandford near Holt, it is a family-run daytime bistro serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea with a commitment to local sourcing that is evident in every dish.

Owners Carron and James Noon have built something quietly exceptional here since opening in December 2023: seasonal menus that change with what's available from the estate and local producers, a wine and drinks list that draws on local Norfolk vineyards and breweries, and an atmosphere that manages to be both energetic and deeply relaxed. The crab sandwiches — made with crab from fishermen just up the coast at West Runton — are some of the best in Norfolk. Smoked salmon from Staithe Smokehouse, beef burgers from HV Graves, vegetables from local growers, and some of the finest vegan options in the county complete a menu that gives everyone around the table something to be enthusiastic about.

Open daily 9am to 4pm with occasional evening events. Dogs are warmly welcomed, and the 5km circular walk around the Bayfield Estate makes a perfect companion activity before or after a meal. Booking is recommended, particularly at weekends.

Booking Restaurants in North Norfolk

Several of the restaurants on this list — particularly Meadowsweet, Morston Hall and The Neptune — book up many weeks or even months in advance, especially for weekend dates in summer. If dining at any of these is high on your list, we'd strongly recommend booking before you travel rather than hoping for availability on arrival.

The Carpenters Arms and The Black Lion can often accommodate bookings at shorter notice and are ideal for a mid-week meal without the planning pressure of a fine dining reservation.
